New remote system technology transforms safety at Rumaila

Field Development

Teams at Rumaila have successfully implemented the remote shutdown for all 450 Electrical Submersible Pump wells across Rumaila.

This upgrade marks a transformative step in enhancing safety and operational efficiency across the field.

Previously, shutting down an ESP required on-site manual intervention in potentially hazardous conditions. This process exposed staff to risk and introduced critical time delays depending on location and circumstances.

Now, the Variable Speed Drives can be stopped and shut down remotely from the degassing stations, reducing the risks to personnel and the environment. The new system also allows for ESPs to be shut down within 5 to 20 seconds. This minimizes the window of potential escalation in emergency situations, setting a new standard for safety at Rumaila.

This activity comprised the following phases:
  • 2022 – Trial carried out on a selection of wells.
  • 2023 – Trial completed successfully, plan for implementation of technology approved and started
  • 2024 – Training delivered to operation teams at all degassing stations.
